What to do while you wait

The single most useful thing you can do in a water emergency is stop the flow. Find your internal stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink or in the utility, and turn it clockwise until it stops. That shuts off the mains coming into the house. Then open the cold taps to drain the pipes down, which takes the pressure off the leak.
